Walking & Writing Workshop: Foraging for Creative Ideas by Demi Anter

In-Person

As writers, we can forage for stories, just as others forage for sustenance. On this walk through Berlin, led by writer Demi Anter, we will slow down, look, touch and listen, practicing the art of paying attention and finding new ways of writing the blocks we may stroll down every day. From the details we mine, we will use guided writing exercises to reimagine our day-to-day environment, finding inspiration from history or creating new stories that are totally our own.

The session will consist of reading and discussion of writers from a range of disciplines, a guided walk through Bergmannkiez, stops for refreshments at Another Country Bookshop, writing exercises and feedback, and a final wander through Viktoriapark.

TENTATIVE ITINERARY

  • Meet at Another Country Bookshop: 13:00 - 14:00

  • Wander Through Bergmannkiez: 14:00 - 15:00

  • Viktoriapark: 15:00 - 16:00

  • Back to Another Country Bookshop: 16:00 - 17:00

Who is the workshop for?

Writers from all genres and experience levels are welcome. The workshop will be conducted primarily in English but can be supplemented with German. You are always welcome to write in any language. Space is limited. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Accessibility: The session will be a mix of walking and sitting; please be prepared to be on your feet for some time. Write to us with any questions, concerns, or accommodation requests.

Who is your workshop leader?

Demi Anter is an Austrian-American writer, performer and teacher. Her work has appeared in Magma, Banshee, Ninth Letter, Figure 1, and The Times UK, as well as on BBC Radio London. She has been a featured performer at Glastonbury Festival, Electric Picnic, the Scottish Storytelling Centre, and Poetry Ireland. After five years in Berlin, she now lives in London where she is completing an MFA at Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance. Demi's debut collection Small Machine is forthcoming with Write Bloody UK in 2022, and has been called "Tender, visceral, beautifully vulnerable,” by Musa Okwonga (In The End, It Was All About Love.), and "Strikingly luminous and soothing,” by Chanel Miller (Know My Name).

An online seminar with writer Demi Anter and Ceri Savage (Savage Edits) for Women* Writing Berlin Lab e.V..

In this 3-hour online seminar, writer Demi Anter and self-publishing expert Ceri Savage of Savage Edits share their collective publishing experience, covering traditional pathways and self-publishing for poets, writers of literary fiction, genre fiction, and more.

Demi and Ceri will share lessons learned from their publishing careers: Demi's debut poetry collection, Small Machine, came out in April 2022 with Write Bloody UK, and was shortlisted for the Poetry Book Awards after a successful international tour. With her company Savage Edits, Ceri guides authors through every step of the self-publishing process.

This session will also cover how to approach publishers with your book idea, marketing for authors, and where the industry is going next. Demi and Ceri will lead some fun, short exercises to help participants brainstorm next steps in their publishing journeys.

What will I learn?

Attendees can expect practical advice and tools, and answers to questions like: "How do I decide between traditional and self-publishing routes for my book?" "How do I find the right publisher for me?" and "How much can writers earn from various modes of publishing?"

Who is the workshop for?

This seminar is recommended for authors with yet-to-be-published manuscripts and for early-career writers seeking guidance as they plan toward a book-length work.

Workshop will be in English with translations available upon request. B1/B2 level English comprehension is recommended.

About Your Workshop Leaders

Demi Anter is an award-winning writer and performer, with work spanning poetry, creative nonfiction, script- and playwriting. She has been published in the US, Europe and the UK by Magma, Banshee, and The Times, and has performed at Glastonbury Festival, Bristol Old Vic, Poetry Ireland, and more. Her teaching focuses on the power of writing from personal experience, and she has conducted workshops at various institutions worldwide.

Ceri Savage is a self-publishing expert who’s guided over 25 writers through the process in the last 7 years. She’s edited 86 books, including 2 USA Today bestsellers. Her business Savage Edits is about to become the first all-in-one digital platform for self-publishing authors. Ceri is also a writer, published in The Honest Ulsterman, Passengers, ASP Literary & more, with a BA in Literature from Exeter University.

A couple months into our writing season, and we have been writing and developing like crazy. At some point, we stop and look around and wonder, “Am I ever going to finish this? Is it any good? How do I make this better? Oh god, which one do I choose?”

In this 4-hour, weekend workshop, we will be working in small groups, we will be editing and providing feedback on each other’s stuff. Each group will be led by a community member who will guide the group in editing, feedback, and revision techniques that each writer can apply to their craft.

What will I learn?

  • How to provide constructive feedback

  • How to apply revision techniques 

  • How to advance one’s craft

  • How to participate in group discussions

  • How to collaborate in writing circles

What will I need?

  • 5 Pages of Work Maximum (poetry, a short story, novel excerpt, script, etc.). Please double space longer prose texts)

Donjeta Hasani is the daughter of Kosovo-Albanian immigrants, Donjeta (or Dona) was born and raised in Stuttgart and studied archaeology and philosophy in Heidelberg, where she also worked as a bartender for years before starting a career in the film industry in Berlin. Her writing involves dissecting her own neurosis and questions of identity. She loves the strong community at WWBL and how it has helped her writing and disciplined her creativity, and therefor wants to spread the good vibes further.

Allia Sadeghipour is is a queer Iranian-American Surrealist, humanist, writer, teacher, punk, poet and Drag King. She is President of the Women Writing Berlin Lab e.V. and has taught workshops locally and internationally for GLADT and Feminist film organizations.

She won the Sherry Debrowski Prize for Best Feminist Multi-Genre Fiction writer in 2009 and has not stopped since. Most recently, her work has been featured in The Bear: Favorite Storyteller (2018 & 2020), KCRW and the Goethe Institute (2018 & 2020), The V Series Poetry Anthology (2019), Berlin Untelevised (2019), Coven (2019), What's Afghan Punk Rock Anyway?! (2019), The Ghosts of Berlin: Der Geister von Berlin (2019), Literarische Diverse (2019), Teach the Rainbow: Insights from LGBTeachers about Queer Visibility (2020), Salty World (2022) and much more. Her short fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art have appeared in collections, anthologies, journals, newspapers, and WWBL’s own in-house publications; she also served as Poetry Editor of volume 2 of the Connecticut Literary Festival Anthology. A New England native, she has lived in Berlin since July 2019.

On this walk through Berlin, led by writer Demi Anter, we will slow down, look, touch and listen, practicing the art of paying attention and finding new ways of writing the blocks we may stroll down every day. From the details we mine, we will use guided writing exercises to reimagine our day-to-day environment, finding inspiration from history or creating new stories that are totally our own.

We will also talk about fallow periods. For many creatures, winter is a time for hibernation, yet the human animal pushes to keep working. We’ll discuss creative cycles and how to work within them.

The session will consist of reading and discussion of writers from a range of disciplines, a guided walk through Neukölln, stops for refreshments at Das Gift, writing exercises and feedback, and a final bonus stroll through the Alt-Rixdorfer Weihnachtsmarkt.

Who is the workshop for?

Writers from all genres and experience levels are welcome. The workshop will be conducted primarily in English but can be supplemented with German. You are always welcome to write in any language. Space is limited. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Who is your workshop leader?

Demi Anter is an Austrian-American writer, performer and teacher. Her work has appeared in Magma, Banshee, Ninth Letter, Figure 1, and The Times UK, as well as on BBC Radio London. She has been a featured performer at Glastonbury Festival, Electric Picnic, the Scottish Storytelling Centre, and Poetry Ireland. After five years in Berlin, she now lives in London where she is completing an MFA at Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance. Demi's debut collection Small Machine is forthcoming with Write Bloody UK in 2022, and has been called "Tender, visceral, beautifully vulnerable,” by Musa Okwonga (In The End, It Was All About Love.), and "Strikingly luminous and soothing,” by Chanel Miller (Know My Name).
