Embroidery & Storytelling Workshop

Embroidery & Storytelling Workshop for BIPOC/Migrant/Refugee Women*

A collaborative workshop with artist Ksenia Telepova & Allia Sadeghipour President of Women Writing Berlin Lab (WWBL)

Join us in an embroidery and storytelling workshop for BIPOC/Migrant/Refugee women*come together to share their individual stories, community and/or family histories, learn how to embroider, and represent their knowledge and narratives through textiles embroidered work represented and symbolised with storytelling elements.

The woman's side of a family tree is often not acknowledged or passed on through textile skill sets passing down family and/or community stories. Such histories and skills can disappear under imperialist extortion, appropriation, and colonial processes. For migrant women*, the ability to embroider can help weave their history and narrative together, reflecting on their own experiences and identities, while passing the knowledge onto the next generation.

In this 4-hour, one-time weekend workshop, we hope to help develop the skills to guide you to answering the important questions:  How can you tell your story through embroidery? How can you translate your story into a different medium of expression? How can family stories be passed down through learned skills? Why is it important to have the representation and passing on of family or community knowledge?

Identity, Embroidery, Empowerment, & Community through Stitching and Root Building

What will I learn?

  • How to generate creative inspiration

  • How to stitch

  • How to brainstorm stories and creative ideas

  • How to create multi-textile art and stories

  • How to strengthen your own identity

  • How to express your identity through embroidery and storytelling

  • How to tell your story through embroidery

  • How to decolonize and empower yourself or through embroidery

  • How to tell your narrative/story

  • How to become more confident in sharing your history

What will I need?

  • All embroidery materials are provided :)

  • Your ideas and vulnerability

  • Feel free to bring additional materials/textiles

Who is the workshop for?

Jewellery Making & Ancestral Connection Workshop

Jewellery Making & Ancestral Connection Workshop

Jewellery Making & Ancestral Connection Storytelling Workshop by Nelden Djakababa Gericke

Craft making is a refuge and means of taking care of oneself. In trauma recovery, community based circles, weaving and crafting, pulling and pushing, is a symbolic means of helping us work through something in an environment where we feel supported, safe, and comfortable to explore these knots and loops within ourselves. Jewellery are tangible objects, embodied experiences, sometimes passed down through generations to remind oneself of a moment, a memory, a person, an ancestry, or a feeling. It is also something you wear that connects and touches your body (“The Body Keeps the Score”). We choose the symbols of our lives and how they compliment them by adorning our experiences on our body, like with jewellery. Your survival does not depend on whether or not you wear the right bracelet, but it can be used to signal what is important to you OR your representation/how we want to present ourselves to the world. It’s like a happy place you take with you ;p.

While experiences are valid, they can sometimes feel less tangible as time goes on. Through jewellery making, we are reminded that we are real, valid, and adaptable. Just like the pieces we create, play with objects and possibilities without it being set in stone (or resin!) just yet.

In this 4-hour, one-time weekend workshop, we learn the skills of jewellery making, connect with community by telling our stories and craft, create, adapt, and set a piece of  jewellery that you get to take home with you. Join us in crafting, creating, and learning together.

What will I learn?

  • How to make jewellery

  • How to create pendants

  • How to set resin

  • How to manipulate material

  • How to connect with ancestral memories

  • How to symbolize experiences into physical forms

What will I need?

  • All jewellery making materials are provided :)

  • Old photos of ancestors (ideally more than one copy of the original, because we’re gonna cut them up to size and if there’s a mistake, we can take the second copy)

  • Small objects like buttons, coins, stamps, etc. (Whatever the items, be mentally ready to encase them in resin)

  • Your ideas and vulnerability

  • Feel free to bring additional materials/textiles

Who is the workshop for?

Identity & Rites of Passage Writing Workshop by Elif Yücel

IDENTITY & RITES OF PASSAGE WORKSHOP 🌸🌸🌸

(Istanbul, Turkey)

Identity? What does that even mean in this current climate?? The 20’s are difficult enough having to navigate adulthood, we feel fuxked up, lost, confused, and pressured into a very limited time period of our lives while also somehow having to figure it all out at the same time?!

We can feel lost and that’s okay. Sometimes, we just want to be present, play, and get lost in the experience. We still have time. We also have our 30’s, 40’s, humans can live up to 120 years!!! BUT It will never be enough because identity is always changing, shifting, and growing. THAT is the point of life.

Come get lost with us in our writing, thoughts, and experiences as we delve into the confusion and uncertainty of what it means to be in this part of our lives searching for identity. Leave it be. Leave it lost. Experience it. Explore it without fear of judgement, expectation, or outcome. Join us for a 4-hour evening of writing together and exploring identity through storytelling. Let’s write away our uncertainty together 🙏🏼🌺🫶🏽🌸

What will I learn?

  • Tools for written expression

  • How to dive into identity

  • How to reflect on external pressures

  • How to journal

  • How to express one’s thoughts

What will I need?

Curiosity and something to write with.

Language?

Turkish with English translation upon request

Who is your workshop leader?

I was born in Istanbul and currently live in Germany. I am a Comparative Literature student. While I working in the field of literature, I am trying to improve myself in cinema and screen writing. Writing and reading are my comfort zones. My communication skills are what makes me feel most confident. Dancing, cooking, communicating with people, and watching sitcoms are my favorite activities. I'm grateful to be a part of the team and excited for my adventure with WWBL!

CV & Cover Letter Writing Workshop by Allia Sadeghipour

CV & Cover Letter Writing Workshop by Allia Sadeghipour

A workshop by WWBL President, Producer, Performer, Artist & educator Allia Sadeghipour

ONLINE

New Year, New You, Same Old Glass Ceiling. While Covid still lingers, many of us are left wondering if this is truly what we want but are restricted by financial limitations and responsibilities. Some of us have hopes of navigating a new job market, but have no idea what to look for, what current employers are searching for, or what the hell SCRUM means?! Some of us don’t know how to update our resumes for the CV market, let alone understand the M/W/D next to each German job posting. Whereas the American job postings and CVs prefer total anonymity, the German market requires all of your information up front. Let’s be honest, the world needs to change and we want to change too, but we need financial support to do it.

In this 4 hour workshop, attendees will write their way into the careers they want by analyzing the German and American job markets, CV’s, cover letters, and utilizing the course materials to write job application materials (CV’s, outreach emails, cover letters, etc.) with the guidance of the workshop leader. There will be ample time for participants to draft their CV’s and cover letters during the workshop. After each workshop, the attendees will have a better understanding of each topic and be able to draft their own outreach email/CV/cover letter.

What will I learn?

  • How to search for a job

  • How to analyze German/American job markets & posting

  • How to write outreach/networking requests

  • How to write, construct, and design a CV

  • How to write cover letters

Who is the workshop for?

This entry-level workshop is open to any woman* looking to enter a new field, start or change their career, find financial stability, get back into the job market, immigrate to a new one, shift gears, break through the glass ceiling, carve a new path, make a life for themselves, their family, and/or those who came before and after. It’s for those who want to do something new but don’t know where to start!

No previous experience required. Workshop will be in English with translations available upon request. B1/B2 level English comprehension is recommended.

Your workshop leader also offers one-on-one sessions for a sliding scale of 15-20€/hr (private clients) and 50-64€/hr (business/corporations).

Who is your Workshop Leader?

Allia (A.E.) Sadeghipour is a Queer Iranian-American Surrealist, humanist, producer, performer, artist & educator. She is the President of the Women* Writing Lab Berlin (WWLB), taught workshops for GLADT and Feminist film organizations, and works for a plethora of academic institutions such as the Volkhochschule Mitte, Saddleback College, and Humboldt Universitaet Berlin. Born in the United States, her family moved to Iran where Farsi became her first language. She later moved back to the United States, and, in re-learning English, excelled and earned her BA and teaching credential in English and an MA in Literature and Writing Studies. She has a keen sense for language learning and has taught a variety of courses from: ESL, business, modern culture and folklore, mental health and cognitive science, and writing workshops for Women and LGBTQI+ organizations. Writing Lab Sessions

Had a fabulous summer? Missing the joy of writing with other fab humans? We’re baaaaaaack!!! We’re all feeling the change of season, and, as most Berliners, we lived the summer through a quick and illuminating rush of energy. Now, the light is dimming, and this is our cue for some good ol’ reflecting time. What better way to do so then with a group of fellow writers?

Each week, a community member will guide us through different writing prompts/topics. Let’s come together collaborate, commiserate, and write our way through the winter!!!

Be sure to bring something to write on, with, monies for food stuffs, and your glorious selves :D. We look forward to seeing you there!

As a safety to our community, please be sure to follow the 3G's. The location is close to public transport

If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to contact us via FB or Insta. See you then!

***Events are for community members only. If you are interested in joining the community, go to the community tab in our Facebook page below and please read our Community Guidelines before sending the request.
