Film Writing Masterclass
Fueling Yourself to Tell Your Story on Screen
with Crystal Joy for Women* Writing Lab Berlin
Writing a film isn't as scary as people think it is. With anything, the first battle is taking that first step. As an actress, I wanted to create my own stories so I started making short films rather than wait on others to hire me. Making films is a lot of work, but I've learned a lot from each project I've created. As I continued to build my body of work, my confidence grew, and that provided the fuel to make the next film. After doing it for so long I've gained enough knowledge and experience to help others take their first step. The most important thing you need for this class is the motivation to do the work -- because that's what it takes. It is also encouraged to bring ideas before class starts, but it isn't mandatory as in-class time will allow the chance to brainstorm. It is an 8 day class, however 3 of those days will be lectures for up to two and a half hours, and the other 5 will be dedicated to writing.

ABOUT YOUR TEACHER:
Crystal Joy moved to New York City from Chicago, IL with a degree in Journalism and a minor in Marketing from Loyola University Chicago. Shortly after her move she immediately began acting classes at HB Studios and expanded to Stella Adler, Lucid Body, and joined the theater company, Theater of A New Generation. Some of Crystal’s theater credits include the Off-Broadway productions Dead End, The Cherry Orchard, and 12 Angry People as well as several short films, an independent feature, commercials, and a TV show. Crystal's love of storytelling has made room to work not only as an actress but as a writer and producer. Ms. Joy founded her own production company, Blu Room Productions in 2017. She has written several projects under her company that have garnered international attention, "Behind The Silence," the popular social media project "An Instagram Script Series: Nights" and the latest, "Jozi To The World," which recently became an official selection in the Gauteng Women Film Festival in South Africa. Crystal's mission with Blu Room is to tell narratives of everyday people looking for ways to love, serve, contribute, and overcome through the channels of digital media, independent film, and theatre. After creating "Jozi To The World" Crystal realized the need for cross-continental narratives and collaborations and aims to build a bridge between African Americans and Africans across the diaspora. She is currently in post-production for her next project and will release it this fall. Crystal has a shared love for acting, producing, and writing and as she progresses in her career she continues to excel in her versatility with a range of character roles as well as finding new platforms to deliver her projects. When Crystal is not acting you can find her collaborating with friends, collecting vinyls and books, or traveling.
