Elif Shafak’s The Bastard of Istanbul
A central theme in this brilliant novel is the search for one's identity. I can relate to this because I was raised in a bilingual and bicultural environment. This novel spoke so much to me because of the main character's quest to understand the history of her family in order to get to know herself better.
Armin Pongs’ Die Welt in meinen Augen
This is the autobiography of German sociologist Armin Pongs, whom I had the pleasure to meet while he was on a book tour in Panama. He narrates how he overcame grief after losing his wife to cancer as well as how he travelled the world in search of stories that would heal his soul.
Isabel Allende’s De amor y de sombra
This classic of Latin American literature is a must-read! For all of you out there who believe in the all-encompassing power of love and hope, this book is for you.
